CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Things usually slowed down once breakfast was done and thankfully, today was no exception. Lyra took the opportunity to contact the hospital and was told that Leroy was in a stable condition.

Next, she called Sheriff Walker. While she wanted to share the news about Leroy, so he could convey the message when interviewing people, there was also the need to know if he had any more news on Leroy’s attacker.

Disappointingly, the friendly voice of earlier this morning changed as soon as she asked. Surely it was a fair question, but he had nothing he could or would say about the matter other than no one had been caught yet and they were working hard to change that.

It sounded like something he read off a card and though she was sure Walker was doing his best, this was personal. Along with Rob’s death, she was frustrated and worried that there was no one in custody. Spending most of her day with one or the other she cared a great deal about them. While she could do nothing more for Rob, what she desperately needed to know as a connecting factor, was she somehow the motive for hurting both men?

A physical pain clutched at her stomach. It wasn’t too many months ago that she’d been through similar troubles and people had been hurt because of her. She couldn’t bear it if something happened to anyone else. Had she made a mistake bringing Mom here?

“I’m going to see Leroy.” The words were out before they were more than a conscious thought.

“Good idea. Then you can see for yourself how he’s really doing,” Patricia said.

“I hate to leave you to cope with lunch, but I think we’d all like a first-hand account, right?”

Poppy nodded enthusiastically as did the others.

“Do you mind if I come?” Maggie asked. “It’s not as though I can cook.”

Lyra took off her apron and smiled. Maggie watched her the same way her mom did and knew she was struggling. Quite frankly the company would be nice. “You’re welcome to come. There are no orders waiting, so now is the best time. Are you sure you don’t mind, Mom?”

“Not at all. With Poppy, Earl and me, we have a great team. The customers will understand why there’s nothing fancy when they know where you’ve gone.”

As she was leaving, Poppy handed her a small posy of flowers.

“They’re from Mom’s garden.” She spoke through quivering lips. “I asked her to bring them for the diner, but could you take them to Leroy and please give him our love?”

Lyra took the flowers and gave her a hug. “They’re lovely and don’t worry, I’m sure he’s going to be as good as new very soon.”

“I hope so.” Her big eyes shone with tears.

It was all Lyra could do not to shed a few herself. Relieved that Mom and the other two were holding down the fort, Lyra made up a box of cookies and then she Maggie set off for the hospital. Glad of her friend’s company they drove the country lanes in peace until they got closer to Destiny.
